“The environment is in us, not outside us. The trees are our bloodstream. We are all interconnected, and what you do to the environment, ultimately you will do to yourself.”

Interesting concept, isn’t it? If we look at the marketing that surrounds us, it has typically been designed to promote the lavished capabilities and glossy aesthetics of the final product. However, we also have a growing disconnect between customers and their knowledge about what they are consuming. This is the focus of TOM Organic; the Melbourne based business, dedicated to making pads and tampons without harming the environment, or you, and to help raise awareness about what we’re putting into our bodies.

If we take a closer look at traditional menstruation products, we quickly discover that they are laced with pesticides and synthetic products. The harmful ways in which we treat the environment when we create products is being fed straight back into the most sensitive areas in our bodies.

Through the use of their products, there are a few things we can be sure of:

  • We know that what we are putting inside our bodies is pure organic cotton, which is softer, more breathable and less harmful on our skin.
  • We know that we’re keeping synthetic pesticides, chemicals and genetically modified materials out of the air, water and soil.
  • Our waste (approx. 15,000 per person in a lifetime!) will decompose much faster than conventional pads and tampons
  • The packaging is either recyclable or FSC certified, and use only soy-based inks

Being one of the first B-Corp members, we think what TOM organic has done a fantastic job at creating a sustainable option for consumers. In fact, they have been so popular, they have even extended their product range to include maternal pads and baby products such as nappies and wet wipes.

Words With Heart

The stationary brainchild of Lauren Shuttleworth, came about during her voyage home from a volunteering trip to Kenya. She stumbled upon a notebook, the cover of which read read; “let’s get back to boys, heels and blogs”.

Rightly unimpressed and slightly frustrated with  the apparent “blanket of negativity” that covers the world, Lauren thought she could do better. Words with Heart, the empowering stationary company with a social conscience, was born.

Words With Heart specialise in stationary and printable collections that carry meaning. Each of their products in the range of notebook and journals have a motivational and empowering quote on the front. One of our favourites here is “write your own story”; reflecting the ethos of the company. In addition to this, customers can design their own covers that reflect them and the values that they hold dear. Personalised, professional business cards are also available

Did You Know: Only 1% of the world’s water supply is usable. The rest of the water is found in oceans and in frozen icebergs

Keep an eye out for: Ben and Jerry's Ice-cream

Next issue we celebrate the amazing work of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. Not only do they taste great, they’re helping our people and our planet with every tub!
